80's cartoons
73I am a product of the 80's
Yes, I came from that time of bad hair, terrible clothes and the cheesiest marketing campaigns known to mankind.
What's worse than that? I miss it. A lot.
Ok, so maybe I don't. Let's face it that what I really miss are the cartoons. When I grew up it was all about Transformers, GI Joe, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, and anything involving dinosaurs. Seriously, anyone remember a fancy little show called Dinosaucers?
Dinosaucers
Yeah, that show was the epitome of what terrible dinosaur shows was all about. And I never missed an episode. In fact, I may have had a crush on the blonde girl. Dear God I just put that out on the internet didn't I?
So 80's cartoons had everything you needed. Saturday mornings were something special. As a child, can you think of a time you didn't get up early on a Saturday morning? You were always awake, even if it was 5am. If that was when cartoons started....that was when you started. They went strong from about 6am until 1pm. You had kids gameshows too! It was a great lineup.

20 years later, this intro still haunts me...
The day the Cartoons Died
Looking back, I feel that cartoons now are terrible(yes, I am well aware that I am jaded beyond measure. Everyone I know older than me says their cartoons were better than my cartoons). I mean, what is this Yu Gi Oh?
Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate the media tie in for mass marketing, but that cartoon is nothing compared to say GI Joe or even Denver the Last Dinosaur.
Heck, those were the days when your cartoon got a cereal created after it, not a cartoon made after a trading card game. Let's not even mention what the Yu Gi Oh followers are compared to He Man.
Remember waking up on Saturday mornings to watch your favorite cartoons? Remember when you thought you were too old for them and started doing grown up things? Then do you remember when you tried to get up early to watch the cartoons again and you were disappointed in what you found?
Yeah, that was me.
I couldn't stand what I found. My feelings? Shock. Mortified. I remember watching shows like Ghostbusters, Voltron, and even the occasional episode of Strawberry Shortcake. Although I see Ms Shortcake has made a comeback to Saturday mornings. Either way, I felt like I betrayed my cartoons and let them slip away.
I found shows that in my opinion were poorly animated, and not exactly kid tested mother approved. The humor seems very inappropriate for kids. Watching these shows with my kids surprised me a lot. I can believe what is on the tv, what I cant believe is that I was letting them watch it. Even a lot of kids cartoons, without much to select from, I find myself letting them watch programs that I'm not fully approving of.
What's a kid at heart to do?
Now I'm 28 years old now. Transformers are long past their air time. In fact, all of my favorite 80's cartoons are out of air time. Well I did what any nerd my age would do. Scoured the internet. With the invention of high speed internet(brought to you of course by the founder of the internet, Al Gore), I took to digging and digging, trying to find places I could download episodes. One of the best sites I found is 80scartoons.net
They have a good variety of cartoons, some common, some obscure, most that you have been reminiscing about since they ended the USA Cartoon Express, and few I'm sure you are wanting to forget. Youtube has a lot of clips too, they offer great cartoon intro compilations and a lot of your favorite music.

GI Joe the Movie
Thanks to the improvements on computer hardware, I can even hook up my computer to my tv and watch my favorite cartoons with my kids. They love it too. If I can play it on my computer, I can play it on my tv.
Just to give you an idea of how pathetic I am to my cartoon desires, let me entertain you with a tale. Shortly after I got married, I found a Saturday morning cartoon called Transformers RID. This show was great, not quite what I wanted, but good enough. So I would wake up early and get out my transformers actions figures and play with them while watching the cartoon.
Yeah, I think I can corner the market of recapturing my youth! Those were the actions of a desperate man.
At least now I can remake some of my old Saturday mornings and share them with my kids!

Some right classics on here, great hub :)
Yo Gspyda I'm a diehard 80s cartoon fan like you, just read your article and couldn't agree with you more. Most cartoons nowadays don't have the heart like they did in the 80s or 90s. They're all about stupid jokes and toilet humor, and you know what I don't get is how a show like Spongebob Squarepants last for ten years but He man, Transformers and G.I. Joe last for two or three seasons. Now don't get me wrong there are some shows that I've seen lately that are actually watchable like Huntik and Secret Saturdays. So lets hope that they go back to making shows like that have storylines and cool animation. Plus, regarding you having a crush on that blonde girl on
Dinosaucers,(her name is Sarah btw) I don't blame you one bit I also felt the same way too, I mean what's not to like about her. She's the wholesome all american girl next door you always wanted to date. She was smart, pretty, intelligent, levelheaded, atheltic and had a sweet personality something you hardly see with female characters
in cartoons, Most of them nowadays are too snotty and bitchy and hardly contribute to anything but make snide comments and the ones in anime are even worse, they are whiny, annoying and have the most irritable, grating nails on a chalkboard voices you will ever hear and half of them act like they're bipolar, off their meds or even on their periods or something when they're always throwing their little hissy fits. Speaking of Dinosaucers, It may have been hokey but its better than DinoSquad not saying that Dinosquad is a bad show or anything but I rather watch a battle between the good guys and the bad guys than watch 30 minute psa promo about whats inside that counts. I mean save it for after the show. That's all.
Spot on man, no real insight or message in today's cartoons. 80s Rocked!
OMG land of the lost..........my daughter watched this religiously every saturday. was i the only one who wondered how they got gas for the truck that fell through the hole in the earth??
There was a weekday afternoon cartoon VERY SIMILAR to Voltron EXCEPT there were individual robots that the human characters would fly into and mount in there heads. The most distiguishable thing I remember about this cartoon is that the female chracter robot would shoot her breast as missiles saying "Fire one! Fire two!" What is the name of that cartoon?!?!?!?!?!?!
transor z
AWESOME!!! I love the smurfs and all the saturday morning line up on ABC from like 86 on.

Gspyda - I like this hub and love your honesty! I don't remember "The Last Dinosaur" (btw, your utube link for "Dinosaucers" is no longer available). I'm a decade ahead of you for Saturday morning cartoons but can identify with some of what you've shared. I loved "Superfriends" and inbetween cartoons, the educational catchy tuned "Schoolhouse Rock." Do you remember a show called "Land of the Lost?" or how about "HR Puffinstuff" (not sure that was really the name of the show but it was one I'd frequently watch). Both these shows were kind of hoakey and the later was not a Sat. am show but came on in the afternoon.
Yeah, I'd agree with you regarding today's kids programs and cartoons and I'm in the same boat. Yu Gi Oh and others are kind of dark in my opinion and our boys know they aren't supposed to go there.
Do you know that praise and worship song that goes, "What if cartoons got saved, I think they'd be singing praise" and it goes on with different characters like Yogi Bear, the Flintstones, the smurfs, Elmer Fudd and how they would each be singing "Hallelujah" versions unique to their personalities. Love that song.
